Fort Lauderdale’s Sun Surf and Sand, commonly coined S3, is one of the coasts newest and already booming eateries. From the restaurateurs who brought you YOLO, this fittingly described upscale casual diner is directly opposite the beach and renders casual dining with an upscale resort feel. The drinks are great but much of the food is nothing to write home about. Don’t get me wrong. It’s actually pretty good and very reasonably priced, but better meals are served at your local Cheese Cake Factory. That said, the macaroni and cheese is very delicious. It is very cheesy (almost to a salty fault, especially when matched with the bacon bits) but delicious none-the-less.
A stickler for my good old Crab-cakes Benedict, I ordered it off the menu but I wasn’t impressed. Balans still holds the crown on that dish. At the recommendation of Yelp and Open Table reviews I ordered the blackberry lychee drink and it delivered. It’s a crisp, refreshing drink with real chunks of fresh lychee and blackberries. The shrimp toast was okay. While the shrimp was well prepared, the toast arrived quite soggy from the sautéed juices. The burgers were okay and the panna cotta came in equal measure.
I have heard very good things about the sushi and I thoroughly enjoyed the tuna tower. For more on S3 including directions and menu, click here.
